Women’s Institute

The Ashley Welland Valley WI is a group of like-minded women, with members coming from Ashley, East Carlton, Cottingham, Middleton, Wilbarston and Great Oakley.

The group meets at 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of the month in Ashley Village Hall, except for December, August and January. There’s a general meeting that lasts about 20-25 mins followed by a speaker, activity or demonstrator at 8pm. Visitors can come along to these meetings for £5, including refreshments.

The WI also tries to arrange some kind of social event each month, for example walks, theatre outings, breakfast at Rural Relaxing on a Saturday morning, snowdrop walk in East Carlton Park followed by coffee and cake at a member’s house.

“Also, just to start the year off with a little fun, there’s always a Silly Social at East Carlton Cricket Club in January,” says Wendy Martin, President of Welland Valley WI. “The evening is intended to cheer everyone up and to raise money for our chosen charity of the year – this coming year it is Corby Mind. We are the usual mixed bunch of women, but most commonly enjoy each other’s company and are interested in expanding our horizons.”

The maximum group size is 40 and subs for the year starting April 2025 are £51, giving members access to all the WI offers incuding 11 monthly meetings, wight WI Life magazines and access to the WI online Learning Hub. Northamptonshire County WI arranges walks, quizzes, speakers, trips, crafting sessions etc at much reduced rates. Anyone joining our group through the year will join at a pro-rata rate.

The WI supports the village fete, there are are bi-monthly collections for the Trussell Trust Foodbank in Corby and a 50p book swap at each meeting, with money going to the WI’s chosen charity.

If you’d like more information or would like to come along to a meeting, please get in touch,” says Wendy. “We would love to hear from you.”
